Magick is Art, Art is Magick

From Sekhet-Maat Lodge

"To conclude, one may add that natural artistic ability, if you possess it, forms an excellent guide. All Art is Magick.

"Isadora Duncan has this gift of gesture in a very high degree. Let the reader study her dancing; if possible rather in private than in public, and learn the superb "unconsciousness"—which is magical consciousness—with which she suits the action to the melody. There is no more potent means than Art of calling forth true Gods to visible appearance."

—Aleister Crowley, Liber ABA, Part 3, Chapter X.

Since I have little or no artistic ability, this one's always been a struggle for me. I have been greatly influenced lately, however, by the Orthodox tradition, especially as it relates to the use of voice in my rituals. I can - or merely believe that I can - direct a lot of what happens by the use of the simple 8-tone chant or intonation of Byzantine tradition. It's very dramatic, or can be. I believe it has a very positive effect.
On the subject of imagery, I once tried to learn iconography, but it turns out I didn't have enough money to take the class (since I'm now spending about the same amount to go to NOTOCON!, it's like "go figure"). I've actually had a much stronger connection with the use of color by using needle and thread. I own two robes that have fairly elaborate embroidery work. Yes, I know, Rosey Grier does needlepoint: I've been told that for years. I could stand to do it again, because one of the robes needs a slight repair - it's covered with 8-pointed stars, one of which keeps catching on a drawer handle - and also, I'm thinking of making a black robe so I can take First Degree and my magical motto(es) on the hem would be about perfect. Come to think of it, maybe embroidery is my form of iconography. I've already 'said' most of the kinds of things iconographers 'say' through its use. I could be a much better Artist (and Magician) than I previously thought.
